Ten Best Fighting Dogs in the World

bull-baiting

While this site neither condones nor approves of dog fighting, it does become a factor when people are searching for guard dogs. There is a close correlation in how a dog defends itself with the selection of a dog for guarding of family and property. While dog fighting is not legal in the United States, it is not illegal to own a dog bred for fighting.

Dog fighting has been documented in the recorded history of many different cultures, and is presumed to have existed since the early domestication of the species. Many breeds have been bred exclusively for the might, mind-set, and physical features that would make them better fighting dogs.

It has also been popular in many countries throughout history and continues to be practiced both legally and illegally around the world. Japan, Russia, South Africa, and much of Latin America have either no laws against dog fighting or are lenient against this crime. Japan is one of the only countries where this form of competition is not a blood sport, but a contest with strict guidelines and ceremony.

This list of the ten best fighting dogs in the world is organized for statistical purposes and is in no way a merit or support for the sport of dog fighting. It is only to help people in deciding what breed is best for guard dog training.

fila-brasiliero

10.  Fila Brasileiro

The Fila Brasileiro is thought to have been developed from a number of breeds, predominantly the Mastiff, the Bulldog, and the Bloodhound. The Fila Brasileiro is an exceptional guard dogs and cattle herders. It does not hide its dislike of strangers, but these dogs are not disqualified from the show ring for showing aggression to the judges.

pakistani-mastiff

9. Pakistani Mastiff

All Pakistani Mastiffs have English Bull Terrier blood as well as blood from the crossings of several other British breeds such as English Mastiffs, Pointers and several types of British hunting dogs.

The Pakistani Mastiffs are victims of dog fighting but most of these rare dogs are used as guard dogs in Pakistan and India. It is because of their enormous size and strength that a few find themselves in the hands of people who choose to use them for dog fighting which is still illegal in Pakistan and its neighboring countries.

cane-corso

8. Cane Corso

The Cane Corso’s history is shrouded in mystery and differing opinions. It is generally agreed that the Cane Corso is a farm dog which has been used for stock control, property, guard dogs and big game hunting throughout its Italian history.

caucasian_ovcharka_attacking

7. Caucasian Ovtcharka

The fighting strains of the Caucasian Ovcharka can contain blood of some European breeds, from mastiffs to American Pit Bull Terriers and Bandogs, but these crosses are a minority in the breed. These dogs were used for centuries to protect properties, guard livestock, kill wolves, hunt bears and the green for many other duties.

presa

6. Presa Canario

Presa Canario was created during the 18th century for the purpose of being a guard dog, for the holding and driving of livestock, and exterminating wild or stray dogs. This dog breed was also used for dog fighting, a tradition the English settlers transplanted along with their Mastiff and Bulldog breeds. Canary Islanders consider these fights “honor fights” and not the sole purpose of the animal.

dogo-argentino

5. Dogo Argentino

The Dogo Argentino was bred specifically to avoid the dog aggression problems inherent in the Cordoba Fighting Dog when applied to hunting, specifically its lack of ability to hunt in a pack. The creators of the breed took great care to prevent this undesirable trait from manifesting in the Dogo Argentino, as the breed was always intended to be a pack hunter.

pit-bull

4. American Pit Bull Terrier

There is much debate as to where the APTB belongs on this list. To some, there is no better a fighting dog, but to those who fight dogs legally, this breed is farther down on their list. This dog is most popular for dog fighting in the United States where it is highly illegal.

american-bandogge

3. American Bandogge

While these dogs weren’t bred to be fighting dogs, they do share hostile traits with their crossbreeds, at least when it comes to other dogs, meaning that they make a poor selection for people who’ve never owned a dog, or aren’t familiar with dogs that don’t socialize well with others. Still, some do use these dogs for fighting.

english-bull-terrier

2. English Staffordshire Bull Terrier

English Staffordshire Bull Terrier had originally been bred for bull baiting. The fact that it can scrap with bulls shows that it’s pretty strong breed of dog for fighting.

tosa-inu

1. Tosa Inu

The Tosa Inu is a massive, regal dog, standing well over 30 inches at the shoulders and weighing up to 150 pounds. This is an animal of legendary courage, intelligence and amazing presence. It has been described as the Sumo Wrestler of the Canine World and is considered a National Treasure in Japan. The sight of a Tosa Inu arrayed in full ceremonial fighting regalia and traditionally brought into the fighting arena by two handlers, makes an impressive and unforgettable impact.

  4. Emory on November 24, 2010 at 10:31 pm

I see most of yall have never seen a real dog fight. pound for pound no other dog mathces up with the pitbull. people think because a dog is bigger it will win the fight.A conditioned pit that is at least 50 lbs, will curr out anyof the dogs yall are talking about.Pits where bread to win nothing else, not to protect, not a companion and not to hunt or bait bulls. without people who fight pitts the breed will go extinct. Just becaouse a dog looks like a pit dont make it one. I bread and fought pits for 10 years I know.

  5. Veronica Johnson on November 29, 2010 at 9:22 pm

I have trained, showed, bred, and owned working dogs for 14 years. My husband is in the U.S. K9 Military force. I currently own 2 Dobermans, 1 Cane Corso, a Rottie, the rare Canis Panther, and 2 Dogo Argentinos.
There is some major flaws with this list. For one, Am Staffs (AKA Pit Bulls) are not very trainable. It takes a highly intelligent breed to be a proper guardian. Pits are sometimes stubborn.
A great breed that deserves a spot on this list is a Doberman Pinscher. These are loyal & very obedient dogs.
Also, a Rottweiler is a fantastic, fearless security dog.
    Hope this helped! :)

THE AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIOR IS THE ULTIMATE DOG HANDS DOWN NONE OF THESE OTHER DOG BREEDS WOULD LAST OVER AN HOUR, IN A NONE STOP FIGHT LIKE THE APT

  7. razorb on December 4, 2010 at 9:46 pm

Dude did a girl just comment on this subject ? He is referring to fighting dogs not guard dogs sweety. in regards to the list i totally agree with EMORY. Im quite sure not to many of you have been to a real show. and he’s right if you take a game dog and breed it with a shepard then breed the pup with a shepard , do this 3 times and you have a shepard. Thats just like breeding a game tested dog to a non game tested dog and so on 3 times you no longer have a true PIT BULL. (this is actually somewhat of a quote from the lengendary Pimp, Bootlegger and great dog men Maurice Carver). This is what has happened. there are probably few if any game tested pit bulls left. Its a shame. I would recommend pulling up some history on the pitbull and game dogs.
However i did enjoy the read good Sir.

    Hi all,

You guys are just trying to prove each other who’s got the best. Here is mine: I have a Blue Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino, Rottweiler, Kurdish Kangal, German Shepherd & Presa Canario. These are the best of all. I bet no other dogs can stand a chance against these breeds. They are bred not only to guard but to take down anyone if its necessary. I have trained them the way i want them to behave with any strangers & other animals. They are amazing pets & great companions. You gotta see them yo! You would piss in your pants. Heyheyheee

  13. Jumbo on January 15, 2011 at 12:20 am

Emroy is right, those big bitches will be huffin and puffin while the little pit is still gettin warmed up. Pits were bread for fighting, that’s about it.

  14. Zavier Hinds on January 27, 2011 at 9:30 pm

Bull terrier should be on the list at least before the fila.PIT BUll should be number 1 on that list Presa, Bandog, Cane corso, Dogo and Tosa should be after the Pit bull/American pit bull, stafford shire terrier, bull terrier and the legendary Bull dog in wich all of these dogs sprung from. Just off shire respect of the history of the breed. The Caucasian is an ok selection but not before the Bully Cutta and Shar-Pie. Funny how people talk Ive seen this dog beat this dog and look at the size of this dog in comparison, Its not about that because most of these breeds today are used far apart of what they were breed for. Look at what the breed is/was breed for and you will quickly see my point. The other day Ive seen the most aggressive Scottish terrier backing down an Akita and a Rotti in front of a pet store. I wouldn’t now add that to the list. The purpose is key any dog is capable of doing anything.

  15. kayla on February 2, 2011 at 7:32 pm

they are not fighting dogs they are good dogs i used to have one and he would never even think about hurting someone or something in less they were tring to harm his family

  16. Calder Corey on February 4, 2011 at 3:11 am

While it is one thing to offer education as to what breeds are good watch digs-it is quite another to show dogs in a negative light engaged in aggressive behavior.

Often it is the conditioning that is responsible for extremely violent behavior. Pit bulls are extremely loyal dogs who have been exploited in an evil way by sick individuals. Emory your post is sad and upsetting. Sad for you that you boast about causing suffering and death to many dogs and tragic that thousands of dogs die horrible deaths and suffer horrific injuries because of people like you.

If you care about animals and love dogs I hope you show positive images of these breeds and make it clear you are against dogfighting.

  17. Joe on February 15, 2011 at 5:45 am

I agree with Zavier Hinds. Any dog is capable. Just like any man is capable of learning to fight so is a dog. I have seen thai ridgebacks be as aggressive as Pit bulls. . I own a Thai Ridgeback and they are amazing dogs and I am not saying “they are the best.” But they have torn each others ears, mouths and hips open over a look. They can be very violent dogs also. Then again what dogs are bred for helps tremendously but some dogs are aggressive by nature and can be trained to act on that aggression and others can be taught to fight just as we learn how to fight.

  18. RyyanAli on February 21, 2011 at 9:05 pm

I love German Shepherd…what a mate he is’ more than words can say…….

  19. Lucy on March 1, 2011 at 8:54 am

Why would people fight these animals anyways? Doesn’t anyone watch Cesar Millan.

  20. joshua strange on March 2, 2011 at 5:48 pm

Come on you guys, sound like you have no regaurd for any breed. iI your willing to send them into the ring for your own personal amusment. Aggresive dog for gaurds is smart and sound. Lets keep the dogs out of the ring world wide. THANX. josh

emory your a red neck arsehole you,d quite clearly get on well with micheal vick!!!! (should be sick not vick)! your quite clearly what we call in scotland a NED (non educated delinquent) what sane person would want to see dogs rip each other apart next time your at a dog fight i hope you fall in the pit and they rip you to bits!!!

  22. Kate on March 6, 2011 at 11:50 pm

Razor B, you are an actual gimp, you dont even know that girl so why would you call her sweety? if she wishes to comment on this ridiculous website then she can, how arrogant are you, oh and by the way razor b? hahaha how embarrassing for you.

  23. Annon on March 16, 2011 at 10:28 pm

My female Akbash was attacked by a male and female pit bull. She killed the male within a minute and ripped the female’s ear off and then broke her back. The owner had to put her down.
He lost two pit bulls that day and my Akbash walked away. She had several bites but basically unharmed.
Not saying they are the best but pit bulls can be taken down by many different breeds.
Pits lack intelligence in my opinion.

  24. Danielle Phillips on April 26, 2011 at 9:07 pm

Emory has a point a little bit. I think making and breeding dogs to fight is abusive, neglect, the most stupidest thing EVER! I stand up for all the dogs who always wanted a family and instead their owners wants them to fight other dogs and hurt other animals plus people. I love pitbulls and i stand up for them and all dog breeds but fighting dogs is the most pathetic thing i have ever been researching. I have seen people abuse and neglect their pets so they can’t trust people again. It takes the pet more then 2 years to retrust a person again. I have a way with animals that can help animals to trust people again. I work with so many animals and i have a hard time trusting people like animals can’t always trust people if they put themselves at risk of death. Always train and be a better owner by not fighting dogs and making their breeds to become extinct by euthanized them. More than 23 million pit bulls and other dogs are euthanized from showing aggressive between people, other animals and more. Over 20 million shelters have been euthanized so many dogs because of their stupid idiotic owner makes them become scared and aggressive. Research about them and don’t make a bad decision because its always a illegal and you can spend time in jail for animal cruelty and more.

  25. Henry Brown on May 11, 2011 at 3:50 am

I think APBT’s are the best fighting dogs in the world. APBT’s are the best pound for pound fighting dogs. some pit bulls are freaks (very large) as large as a Tosa. A pitbull as large as a Tossa is a better fighter. A tossa is the seccond best fighting dog in the world and APBT’s are No. 1.

  26. propitt on May 21, 2011 at 4:27 pm

I used to think the pitt was unstoppable.I was wrong, I saw several videos a kangal beats the pitt every time.

  27. fernando on May 22, 2011 at 6:35 pm

in the real competition if you can call it that cause there is no competition for a gamebred pitbull, pitbulls are the bet of the best fighting dogs, no matte what you say…. pound to pound there is no dog can match an actual gamebred pit… maybe in the past the other bull and terriers had any chance today is pitbull terrain and if someone says his akita can beat a pitbull a real pitbull bring him (the dog)

  28. lasha on July 5, 2011 at 12:45 pm

Surely PAKISTANI ‘bully kutta’ is an awesome fighter but more than this it is a guardian dog some idiotic people are just shiting these dogs in dogfights and tearing apart each others. But seriously pitbull worth nothing when stand infront of PAKISTANI MASTIFF!

    agreed with xtacy

  30. Sparee on July 15, 2011 at 12:48 am

your all mad, you cant just say i seen a akita beat a pitbull or a flippin westie beating a pitbull whatever the breed ur going by an average, if every dog was gamerbred and all the species of those differnt dogs were to have a tournament it would DEFINATLY be a final betwenn the AMERICAN PITBULL TERRIER and the ENGLISH STAFFORDSHITE BULL TERRIER, trust me all these paki dog preeds and cross breeds there trying to make bigger and stronger, well hate to tell ya but the best mix’s are staffys n bulldogs n they make pitts. best fighting dogs in the world dong care how big your dog is a PIT would demolish! say no more. none of you know shit.

  31. anonymous on July 17, 2011 at 4:07 am

All of you who are talking about fighting and how cool it is or bragging on what kind of a dog u have shut the hell up do you even realize how stupid all of you sound you think that’s cool well it is the most cruel and immature thing that anyone could do with a dog. All animals are put on this earth to be great companions all they ever want is to be loving and have a good pack leader! For once talk about how sweet your dog is or how important your dog really is to you and how much he means to me you all sound like you dont give 2 shits about ur dog but fighting or bragging about what kind of a dog you have.

  32. Mike on August 9, 2011 at 11:04 am

I have a belgian malinois. It was attacked by two rottweilers yesterday while I took it for a walk. Considering the size disadvantage and the fact that there were two rotties’s against my belgian malinois. I was impressed he came out relatively unscathed with the exception of a bitemarks to his front leg which is causing him to limp.Malinois are known for their intelligence not fighting ability. I eventually had to pull him away otherwise he would have lost to those two rottie’s attacking him.

  33. gixxxer97 on August 24, 2011 at 1:11 am

if we’re talking pound for …my money is on the….wait for it……
Jack Russel. yes ladies and gentleman…..”pound for pound” NOTHING beats it.

I have always raised Pitts, and Mastiffs….but again…pound for pound, its the JACK RUSSEL…..I wonder how many of the above posts for the APBT….are….Americans ?….my guess ? All of em.

Well, sorry to burst your bubles guys/gals, the cane and presa, as well as the tosa, will demolish the APBT…..by the way….currently I have 7 APBT’s ( just to show i am not biased )
but cmon guys, those of you who say you “fight” pitts ? obviously fight only other pitts and nothing else. so get a grip.
thats my 2 cents….dont like it ? so sad too bad. :)

  34. JOSE McGUEVARA on August 26, 2011 at 8:29 pm

alright all i want to kno is there a breed that can mess up a presa canario no problem?,but a breed with slick hair not fury like a kangal but more like a pit or wrotwieler.

  35. bmorebusa on August 31, 2011 at 1:11 am

This is a very interesting list of top fighting dogs. I have raised and bred pitbulls for over 10 years and would agree that they are the second best fighting dog breed. They are fearless, furious and let’s not forget about there intense tolerance for pain. However, I was privileged to witness dog fighting in Afghanistan. The Afghans use a dog called the Afghan Koochie (real name). This dog is extremely strong and as agile as a dog twice as small. Their heads are humongous and they also have the second strongest bite force at 700 lbs. Before I witnessed these dogs fight I would have agreed hands down to the pitbull. Not anymore!

  36. bullet on September 3, 2011 at 1:21 am

paking mowrowns! i’m a real dogman,i breed pitbulls not for a living, but for my passion for the breed. I fight them on a weekly basis. every sunday we fight pits here in the philippines. no other fuk’n breed will last 3 30min rounds against any of my pits, male or female. the only real fighting dog is the pitbull terrier. none of those fat bullies.

  37. bullet on September 3, 2011 at 1:28 am

i matched a 98pound kangal vs. my 44 pound eli/carver gamebred pitbull. It lasted 52mins nonstop, the kangal curred out and died within 24 hours after the fight. it was a 500K(pesos; 500,000 X 42 in us dollars) fight. an arabic guy that lends money here in the philippines owns the kangal. He now owns an eli/carver mix pitbull kennel with 8 females and 4 males and growing.

  38. PRow on September 10, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Dog fighting is a Neanderthal practise fueled by ignorance and cruelty. My heart goes out to these animals. How would you like to to be forced into fighting for your life?

  39. Really? on September 11, 2011 at 9:19 am

I came across this website via a search for Caucasian Ovtcharka. I’m staggered at the moronic stupidity of men sometimes. I can just see you now, tiny little dicks, semi-literate, shaved heads, tattoos.

Newsflash you chimps; tough dogs don’t equal tough men. Real men don’t need to hide behind their dogs.

  40. martin on September 16, 2011 at 11:12 pm

No one mention bully kutta? They’re pretty badass!

  41. SCHOLAR on September 28, 2011 at 12:45 am

You left out the number 1 dog… The KANGAL!

  42. Matt on September 28, 2011 at 5:14 pm

WHOA WHOA WHOA, This article was obviously written by someone who is bias toward bully breeds, don’t get me wrong, I love me a good bully no matter what breed, but nothing can compare to the three aboriginal dogs that all dog breeds came from. The Turkish Kangal, the Caucasian Ovtcharka(which by no means has bulldog blood in it) and the Central Asian shepherd. The blood line of these dogs is over 5000 years old. These dogs have size, strength and speed on any bully breed and have been able to fight predators through famine and drought in all weather conditions. These three breeds don’t have any known health concerns cause they breed through natural selection, they are not man-made, like bully breeds are. You didn’t even give the South African Boerboel, the American Bulldog, Tibetan Mastiff, English Mastiff, Bull mastiff, Neopolitian Mastiff, Anatolian Shepherd, Pakistan Bully Kutta, Akita, and Great Pyrenesse any respect. Study up and come back when you know ur shit.

  43. jaime on October 6, 2011 at 8:03 pm

plain and simple if your involved in dog fighting you a asshole loser who should be left to die like the animals you abuse

  44. johnny on October 14, 2011 at 6:05 pm

Pits aren’t that tough! I was attacked by one and a real tough fighting dog. I’m 125lbs and I knocked the shit out of the dog. I mean knocked him out!! And I was never even bit. I got him before he got me.

    THE PAKISTANI IS TOP DOG!!

  45. Mike Frankrone on October 24, 2011 at 6:14 am

I’m partial to Presa Canarios on this list! For their size & strength they are one of the most agile and athletic of the molosser dogs! If you’ve ever seen a Presa in a fight this breed of dog will make a believer out of you as far as this list goes! I had the misfortune of witnessing a Presa Canario and a very stout Boxer(Bully-Type)get into a fight. Well, let me tell you had there not been 3 people there to break the fight up, that Boxer would have been DEAD! I mean this Presa Canario completely handled the Boxer while 3 men were trying to break it up! It was Horrifying! It took the guys over 5 minutes to pull the Presa of the Boxer. I’ve seen a few dogs get into fights before, but never have I seen the Strength, stamina, agility, ferociousness, and killer instinct that I saw in that Presa that day. Something I wish never to witness again!

  46. Vince on November 8, 2011 at 5:00 pm

I own 1 game dogo, 1 female game souther white bulldog, 1 old English bull dog, 1 female bull terrier, 2 dogue de bordeaux and I can tell you out of my pack it’s the female bull terrier in fact that have the biggest balls and she runs my other dog that are way bigger like 150lbs. As far as hunting BIG game my dogo and southern white bulldog dominate by far in fact my dogo can handle a 200+ wild boar on it’s own but need 2 dog wen boar start weigh in over 220+lbs. Today game dogo still are selected bread, and in Argentina to prove the wordiness they make them fight with mountain lions, with that said the dogo should be on top of the list with pit bull fallow by press canario as those dogs are still been bread for game purpose and if trained will have tremendous stamina, muscle by body weight, strength, Pain tolerance, and still want to fight after injuries like broken bone…., they will not back down they rather die.

  47. Vince on November 8, 2011 at 5:30 pm

As far as guard dog goes there is nothing like a 156lbs dogue de Bordeaux that fearlessly stares at you with a extreme confrontational stand and a bark that go with it. Dogue the Bordeaux have the bigges head piece and therefore are most likely to have the highest bite force.

  48. kei on December 7, 2011 at 10:25 pm

Your all forgetting about the akita inu i seen a legal russian dog fight vs american pit and the pit got thrown about like a rag doll but normally in russia dog fights are done in weight divisions central asian ovtcharka and other large mastiff types like tosa inu dont fight smaller terrier type dogs because pits wont get the chance to out fight a 60 to 70kg monster pitbulls have all that stamina no muscle. Other good fighing dogs thai ridgeback not to be confuesd with rodeision ridgeback very different dogs also alapaha blue blood bulldog bred from the original colby pitbull

  49. Sid Williams on December 18, 2011 at 4:52 am

Just like to give me 2c in this lively debate. I have owned 3 rotties, a bullmastiff and a rescued APBT. All have been good and formidable dogs. My rescued 90 lb pitbull is a sweetie and I thought he had no game in him until he went to dog park. He would never hurt a dog his size or smaller but I quickly found out that any dog bigger than him trying to dominate him was game on. It was a trigger and he would not stop until they were done. A great dane, two german shepards at the same time, a rottie, neopolitan mastiff, and a presa all had to be carried away… and we got banned for him defending himself. Now, I don’t profess to know how he would do against the best of the rest but you have to go a long way to convince me they could take him down and he has no quit in him so they would have to kill him.

P.S. His little girlfriend Gabby is a Jack Russell and he’s her bitch so whoever said the JR is the best pound for pound has my vote.

  50. Austin on December 23, 2011 at 1:55 am
