Ten Best Fighting Dogs in the World

While this site neither condones nor approves of dog fighting, it does become a factor when people are searching for guard dogs. There is a close correlation in how a dog defends itself with the selection of a dog for guarding of family and property. While dog fighting is not legal in the United States, it is not illegal to own a dog bred for fighting.

Dog fighting has been documented in the recorded history of many different cultures, and is presumed to have existed since the early domestication of the species. Many breeds have been bred exclusively for the might, mind-set, and physical features that would make them better fighting dogs.

It has also been popular in many countries throughout history and continues to be practiced both legally and illegally around the world. Japan, Russia, South Africa, and much of Latin America have either no laws against dog fighting or are lenient against this crime. Japan is one of the only countries where this form of competition is not a blood sport, but a contest with strict guidelines and ceremony.

This list of the ten best fighting dogs in the world is organized for statistical purposes and is in no way a merit or support for the sport of dog fighting. It is only to help people in deciding what breed is best for guard dog training.

fila-brasiliero

10.  Fila Brasileiro

The Fila Brasileiro is thought to have been developed from a number of breeds, predominantly the Mastiff, the Bulldog, and the Bloodhound. The Fila Brasileiro is an exceptional guard dogs and cattle herders. It does not hide its dislike of strangers, but these dogs are not disqualified from the show ring for showing aggression to the judges.

pakistani-mastiff

9. Pakistani Mastiff

All Pakistani Mastiffs have English Bull Terrier blood as well as blood from the crossings of several other British breeds such as English Mastiffs, Pointers and several types of British hunting dogs.

The Pakistani Mastiffs are victims of dog fighting but most of these rare dogs are used as guard dogs in Pakistan and India. It is because of their enormous size and strength that a few find themselves in the hands of people who choose to use them for dog fighting which is still illegal in Pakistan and its neighboring countries.

cane-corso

8. Cane Corso

The Cane Corso’s history is shrouded in mystery and differing opinions. It is generally agreed that the Cane Corso is a farm dog which has been used for stock control, property, guard dogs and big game hunting throughout its Italian history.

caucasian_ovcharka_attacking

7. Caucasian Ovtcharka

The fighting strains of the Caucasian Ovcharka can contain blood of some European breeds, from mastiffs to American Pit Bull Terriers and Bandogs, but these crosses are a minority in the breed. These dogs were used for centuries to protect properties, guard livestock, kill wolves, hunt bears and the green for many other duties.

presa

6. Presa Canario

Presa Canario was created during the 18th century for the purpose of being a guard dog, for the holding and driving of livestock, and exterminating wild or stray dogs. This dog breed was also used for dog fighting, a tradition the English settlers transplanted along with their Mastiff and Bulldog breeds. Canary Islanders consider these fights “honor fights” and not the sole purpose of the animal.

dogo-argentino

5. Dogo Argentino

The Dogo Argentino was bred specifically to avoid the dog aggression problems inherent in the Cordoba Fighting Dog when applied to hunting, specifically its lack of ability to hunt in a pack. The creators of the breed took great care to prevent this undesirable trait from manifesting in the Dogo Argentino, as the breed was always intended to be a pack hunter.

pit-bull

4. American Pit Bull Terrier

There is much debate as to where the APTB belongs on this list. To some, there is no better a fighting dog, but to those who fight dogs legally, this breed is farther down on their list. This dog is most popular for dog fighting in the United States where it is highly illegal.

american-bandogge

3. American Bandogge

While these dogs weren’t bred to be fighting dogs, they do share hostile traits with their crossbreeds, at least when it comes to other dogs, meaning that they make a poor selection for people who’ve never owned a dog, or aren’t familiar with dogs that don’t socialize well with others. Still, some do use these dogs for fighting.

english-bull-terrier

2. English Staffordshire Bull Terrier

English Staffordshire Bull Terrier had originally been bred for bull baiting. The fact that it can scrap with bulls shows that it’s pretty strong breed of dog for fighting.

tosa-inu

1. Tosa Inu

The Tosa Inu is a massive, regal dog, standing well over 30 inches at the shoulders and weighing up to 150 pounds. This is an animal of legendary courage, intelligence and amazing presence. It has been described as the Sumo Wrestler of the Canine World and is considered a National Treasure in Japan. The sight of a Tosa Inu arrayed in full ceremonial fighting regalia and traditionally brought into the fighting arena by two handlers, makes an impressive and unforgettable impact.

Having lived in the southern U.S. I have seen dogfights over the years… Across the world dogfighters have seen the best of breeds fight in Japan , Turkey and the Soviet Union. The common knowledge of dog fighting is that the apbt in the 60lb range is the ultimate fighting dog.. and variables of the this breed ( amstaff and bandog ) are pretty much in the same class. The Tosa is a very different type of fighter and the type of Tosa that is the better fighter is not in the size range that you mention… The 70 lb to 90 lb Tosa is the better , more game fighter. The Tosa was crossed to the Pit Bull to improve his ability and gameness so that should tell you something… It is the opinion of Dogmen who travel the world fighting dogs that the Tosa, Kangal and LGDs fall into the second best group of fighting dogs…all having the self-preservation character that has been bred out of the APBT….

I just love to read about these people who own a dog and while they are walking their dog suddenly two or more Pit bulls or maybe a Great Dane and a Kangal and an Ovcharka comes out of nowhere and attacks their poor dog and he responds by killing all the dogs and hardly gets scratched….lol.. To all the people who writes this b.s. A 60 lb APBT that is game will kill … yes kill the LGDs like the Kangal or CAO if they will stay and fight… Only the bully breeds that have been bred to fight for the last 150 yrs. will fight till the death.. The other dogs have the self preservation instinct much like the wolf that will make them break and run if they can get loose….seen it many times… In Turkey they import old pits to train their koochies and kangals to fight . Knowing that the old pits have worn out teeth and are fat and out of shape yet they will not quit , it helps develope staying power in the LGDs but I have seen even the older pits make them run… I myself use a German Shepherd as a guard dog.

volkan, the kangal is indeed a strong dog but not a fighting dog ,he is good at guarding sheeps

  7. Kayla on February 28, 2012 at 12:23 am

I’m sorry guys, all these dogs may be very strong dogs, and willing to fight till death to protect themselves or owners, but the Canis Panther Dog, is by far, the most likely to live from fighting any of these dogs. They have size, strength, agility, determination, and will fight till death if they, or their owners are threatened.

And where is kangal? I think that cc is stronger than a tosa.

  9. TOPDOG on April 7, 2012 at 5:51 pm

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Bunch of fools in here who THINK they know about dog fighting. I know more about dog fighting than Jenna Jameson does about you know what.

I will post the top 5 fighting dogs in the world regardless of weight class.

Kangal – Mastiff family, strongest bite strength of all dogs to include the wolf. There bite strength has been recorded over 750 pds. I saw one of these dogs fight a pitbull and tear its throat out in about 15 seconds it was horrible.

Tosa Inu – Bread in Japan and dates back to the beginning of the Samurai and would fight on the battlefield with these great warriors. These dogs pound for pound will kill other dogs like the pitbull.

Great Paranese – Massive in length and upper body weight. These dogs are massive so keep your pitbull away from these dogs. I saw a pitbull freeze in place when one of these dogs pit its mouth over its entire head.

Kuvoz – Saw one of these fight 2 pitbulls at 1 time in AZ. The pits chesed its ears up a little but the male pitbull got hurt real bad when its rear leg was dangling with a broken leg. The other pitbull the female one was scooped up by its owner.

APBT – Basicly a pitbull on steroids enough said.

German shepard – Following 2nd only to the the kangal the german shepard has the second strongest bite radius of all dogs. Extremely fast and very smart. I will not get into their history as some will find it disturbing and offensive.

How can you have anything but an apbt number 1on this list? While i agree some of these dogs are great guard dogs that doesn’t make for a great fighting dog. GAME! THATS WHAT MAKES THE APBT ABOVE THE REST! This also means that a great fighting dog doesn’t necessarily make for a great guard dog. I have owned Rotts, apbt’s & an american bulldog & i would say the rott in my eyes is one of the finest guard dogs around. By the way i would put my american bulldog above most dogs on your list. The Staffordshire bull terrier?c’mon ..

I am an old man, I have been around dogs all my life and have seen a variety of dogs that were purported to be able to beat the best of the APBT. None of them, and I mean none of them, in the pit were able to stop the pitbull. It is such BS to read some of the comments and to see that the TOSA was rated number one yet in Japan the pitbull is not allowed in the ring any longer with the TOSA since this very fine breed loses consistently to the pitbull. All of these breeds have a great deal to offer and are great dogs but for pit fighting, the APBT has no equal. Ask any person with experience with the various breeds (not one wedded to just a particular fighting breed) and you will be told the pitbull is numero ono. It certainly is NOT the best guard dog, the best shepherd, etc. It was NOT bred for that purpose. Hundreds of years of selective breeding for one purpose- fighting other dogs- has produced a fighter without equal. Sincerely and respectfully submitted.

I saw a Fila Brasilerio and Can Corso mix it up in the first fight. The winner takes on the following challenger. The Can Corso was faster although the fila had the weight. the Corso won on speed. The Corso took on the Canario. The dog fought gallant; but, the Corso was tired. The owner ended the fight by lifting his dog and paid everyone off in cash who had placed a bet. A rematch was scheduled for later. However, I never fought dogs. I have watched a number of them fight. I no longer participate in the activities and lost contact with those who do.

I love reading who has the largest c*** here “GET A LIFE BOYS” your talking as if the animals are bred for fighting “THEY ARE NOT” This page does not seem to be making any clear point here too. Other than promoting DOGS TO FIGHT!!.. And the people responding to it are those that love to use their dogs to fight. Should we find anyone of you doing it you’ll end up seeing a cell door and your dog being taken away from you. “Or even destroyed” as you have delibratley made that dog in to a killer.

  14. midycaprio on May 15, 2012 at 7:52 am

@topdog..the fact that you mentioned all your dogs against a pitbull shows that pitbulls are the best at this game…i say cross breed a pitbull with an english bull terrier..then you will get the best fighting dog ever…
